Teaching similes and metaphors doesn't have to be as tough as shoe leather. In fact, it can be downright fun. I like to start this unit by reading Hanoch Piven's brilliantly clever book My Dog is as Smelly as Dirty Socks. From there, I've been using some of the simile worksheets from Education.com. They're simple but reinforce similes that we often use in everyday life.
Once my students are familiar with the concept, we can play two great games: Simile Bingo and Simile Tick-Tac-Toe. I've been using the bingo board templates from Virginia Musmanno's Language Arts Bingo book. Each card says something like "As soft as..." and the kids just match it to something on their board like "a baby's bottom." You get the idea.
You can use the same cards for each game. And yes, I'm sharing everything with you here.
